Object Symbolism in Scripture

The Goat Hair Tent

The origin of the Hebrew people lies in ancient semi-nomads living in tents like Abraham and his sons did and we still see evidence of in the first seven books of the Bible. Woven tents may date as early as 3,000 B.C.E., judging from the discovery of large loom weights that might have been used in the weaving process.

The first reference to tent dwelling in Scripture, is to that of Noah in Genesis 9:21. It was also at this time that Noah's son, Ham, conducted an indiscretion that would forever adversely impact the stream of mankind that descended from him. See Noah.

Goat hair tent as used today by Bedouins

Tents also invariably reminds us of God's momentous visit to Abraham at his tent in Mamre in which he announced the next step in his creation of a nation for himself, on land that he would empty out of nations occupying it, to serve the following purposes: (1) Bring forth God's written Law. (2) To serve as a Household for himself - in a TENT until a Temple was built. (3) To serve as a vehicle to bring forth the Messiah. (4) Whose capital city, Jerusalem (Zion) would eventually be Messiah's headquarters to rule the world.

The concept of a tent is also used symbolically, for instance of our lives on earth. And how many people have received the scripture "enlarge the place of your tent" in answer to prayer about a bigger house, or some other expansion? This scripture like so many scriptures that are applied to daily living, is actually a message to Israel. In this instance it has to do with Israel's restoration, that, true to the general principle of Israel being a blessing to "many," also benefits Gentiles.

A well with drinking troughs .
The Well & Water Troughs

Wells were dug straight down in the sedimentary rock until it penetrated strata containing subterranean water (a stream, artery, or just oozing from the rock). Some wells were quite deep, like Jacob's well near Sychar in Samaria where Jesus met the Samaritan woman, that is 90 feet (27 meters) deep. No wonder the women at the well said to Jesus: "Sir," ..."you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep."

Note the water trough on the left of the well for drinking water for Livestock.

More important than the physical details are the messages attached to well scenarios. (1) The role of the Jews territorially and spiritually. With woman at the well, the following points are relevant: (2) The irrelevance of tradition in salvation. (3) The PRICE of salvation - "living water."

Noah and the beginning of three basic streams of mankind
Genesis 9:24 When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, 25 he said, "Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers." 26 He also said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem. 27 May God extend the territory of Japheth; may Japheth live in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be his slave." NIV

Jehovah visited Abraham in his tent
Genesis 18:1-2 The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. 2 Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. 8 He then brought some curds and milk and the calf [not quite kosher according to Rabbis] that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree. 9 "Where is your wife Sarah?" they asked him.
"There, in the tent," he said. 10 Then the LORD said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son."NIV

Our earthly Bodies are Tents
Isaiah 38:12 Like a shepherd's tent my house has been pulled down and taken from me. Like a weaver I have rolled up my life, and he has cut me off from the loom; day and night you made an end of me. NIV
2 Corinthians 5:1 Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. NIV

Restoration of Israel
Isaiah 54:1 "Sing, O barren woman, you who never bore a child; burst into song (Jerusalem), shout for joy, you who were never in labor; because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband," says the LORD. 2 "Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes. 3 For you will spread out to the right and to the left; your descendants will dispossess nations and settle in their desolate cities. NIV
Amos 9:11 "In that day I will restore David's fallen tent. I will repair its broken places, restore its ruins, and build it as it used to be, 12 so that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations that bear my name," declares the LORD, who will do these things. NIV
Acts 15:15 The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written: 16 "'After this I will return and rebuild David's fallen tent. Its ruins I will rebuild, and I will restore it, 17 that the remnant of men may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who bear my name, says the Lord, who does these things' NIV
Acts 15:16 'Afterwards' [says the Lord ], 'I will return and renew the broken contract with David, 17 so that Gentiles, too, will find the Lord-all those marked with my name.' TLB
Genesis 18:18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.
Galations 3:8 The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: "All nations will be blessed through you." NIV

(1) The role of the Jews territorially and spiritually
John 4:4 Now he had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
Note the specific mention of it being near a plot Jacob had given to to his son Joseph, implying it was his to give. The relevance is that the blessing Jehovah said Abraham will be for the nations is not just spiritual (...salvation is from the Jews - verse 22 below), but also territorial:
Deut 32:8 "When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, When He separated the sons of man, He set the boundaries of the peoples According to the number of the sons of Israel. NAS
Therefore nations' possession of land depends on the way they treat Israel and is it the God of Israel's sovereign right to increase Israel's blessings as he pleases.
Joel 3:19 But Egypt will be desolate, Edom a desert waste, because of violence done to the people of Judah, in whose land they shed innocent blood.
Isaiah 10:13 "By the strength of my hand I have done this, and by my wisdom, because I have understanding. I removed the boundaries of nations, I plundered their treasures; like a mighty one I subdued their kings."
Isaiah 61:7 Instead of their shame my people will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace they will rejoice in their inheritance; and so they will inherit a double portion in their land, and everlasting joy will be theirs

(2) The irrelevance of tradition in salvation
Jesus first of all broke with tradition in speaking to a Samaritan. It is clear also, from other instances where he acted unconventionally, that he forcefully showed the people that salvation cannot be attained through legalism. His saying to the woman "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink," points to the first step that needs to be taken to be saved: YOU HAVE TO MEET THE ONE WHO CAN SAVE YOU! One cannot be saved by being part of a religion by birth, rituals, pilgrimages, feasts, formal conversion, "trying to keep laws, studying at a seminary, yeshivah, etc.
7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?" 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." 11 "Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?"
Ps 36:7 How precious is your constant love, O God! All humanity takes refuge in the shadow of your wings. 8 You feed them with blessings from your own table and let them drink from your rivers of delight. 9 For you are the Fountain of life; our light is from your light. 10 Pour out your unfailing love on those who know you**! Never stop giving your blessings to those who long to do your will.** TLB  ** Shows that God's love is actually conditional.

(3) The PRICE of salvation
After meeting the Savior personally, there is a price to pay in the form of recognition of guilt, repentance and a willingness to norms that conform to scripture and spiritually correct norms - even of nature. In Jeremiah 31:31-33 we see that these norms is called a New Covenant. In the woman's case a major change to acquire the "living water" Jesus could give her, was to confess that her "free love" lifestyle was wrong and needed to change.
13 Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." 15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water." ...22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. NIV
Jer 31:36 "I am as likely to reject my people Israel as I am to do away with these laws of nature! TLB
Romans 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. NIV
